HEAR ME NOW Country Weekly Review
By Jessica Phillips
3 1/2 Stars
Though her biggest hits as an artist came in the 1980s ("Baby I Lied," "I've Been Wrong Before") Deborah Allen is well-versed in the country sound of the 1990s, having written songs recorded by '90s staples LeAnn Rimes, Brooks & Dunn and Patty Loveless, among others.
The majority of Deborah's new album, including her current single, "Anything Other Than Love," is a refreshing throwback for those who enjoyed the sounds blaring from country radio in the '90s. Hear Me Now marks her first release of new music since 2009's acoustic offering, Deb in the Raw.
Throughout the new release, Deborah's signature sassy lyrics and introspective songwriting take center stage. She balances ballads with heavy doses of honky-tonk on "Never Gonna Run Out of Love," "What Makes A Woman" and the flirty "It Better Be Big," but what's more commanding is her smoky, Heidi Newfield-esque voice, which soars and aches on "Deeper Waters," and even ventures into Celine Dion-lite territory on "I Want You."

Digital Rodeo: "Anything Other Than Love" is Deborah Allen's first single being released from her upcoming album titled Hear Me Now. Since the mid 1970s, Deborah Allen has issued nine albums and charted 14 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Probably her most notable hit was in 1983 with the crossover "Baby I Lied" which reached #4 on the country charts and #26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Not only is Deborah an established major recording artist, but she is an incredible hit songwriter. She has also written hit singles for Janie Fricke, Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker and The Whites. LeAnn Rimes has cut several of her songs also. True to form, Deborah continues her career with yet another beautiful song. "Anything Other Than Love" is about someone starting to fall for another and hoping the feelings are "Anything Other Than Love". The cut has a good "honky-tonk" swing to it and is a great match for her "raspy" country voice. Production and instrumentation are supurb. I like the "country" feel of the music. Great job Deborah!

September 10, 2010 Bartlett Performing Arts & Conference Center Bartlett, TN Born with the gift of music coursing through her veins and with a suitcase full of talent, Deborah left her home in Bartlett at age 18 to set out on a musical odyssey to Nashville. She has since garnered wide critical acclaim in country music circles as both singer and songwriter. With several top ten hits and having established herself as a major recording artist, we welcome her to BPACC for a special Homecoming concert.
By Mark Jordan
Memphis Commercial Appeal
On Friday, the Grammy-nominated performer will return to her hometown for a concert at the Bartlett Performing Arts and Conference Center. The show is fitting for Allen, who, after a career as a mainstream pop country singer in the '80s, has shifted gears in recent years toward making music more reflective of her Mid-South roots.
Allen was raised in Bartlett. Her father, an upholsterer, decorated Elvis Presley's first tour bus, where Allen and her two sisters would sometimes camp out as children. Later she remembers her parents pointing out the King of Rock-and-Roll at McKellar Lake. And as a high school student, she worked as a WHBQ Cutie on "Talent Party," the local "American Bandstand"-type television program hosted by Elvis friend George Klein.
So it probably shouldn't have come as a surprise when Allen told her parents she too wanted to be a singer.
"I think the heart and soul of who I am was embedded in my heart when I grew up in Memphis," says Allen of music. "When I was a little girl and I confided in my mother that I wanted to be a singer and did she think I could do it, she was so encouraging to me. She would say, 'Remember you're from Memphis, the home of the blues and the King of Rock-and Roll.' It was just in me."
Allen lit out for Nashville soon after graduating from Bartlett High School. While working as a Music City waitress, she got her big break when Roy Orbison hired her as a backup singer for $90 a night. In 1979 she was hired to record duet parts on some old recording by Jim Reeves, who had died in 1964. The duets became hits, and Allen got her own record deal in the process.
Beginning with 1980's Trouble In Paradise, Allen released four major-label albums, as notable for hits like "Nobody's Fool" and "Baby, I Lied" as for their stylistic experimentation; the title track to Allen's Telepathy in 1987 was co-written by none other than Prince.
Unsure what to do with her, Allen's label dropped her. She continued to her build her resume as a top-notch Nashville tune smith, penning tracks for LeAnn Rimes, Tanya Tucker, and Patty Loveless, among many others.
In 1993, Allen returned to recording after a six-year absence with the indie release Delta Dreamland. As the title suggested, the record signaled her return to the bluesier sounds of her Memphis youth.
"Memphis was a place that nurtured great music, and I think you can hear a lot of those influences in my music," says Allen, rattling off a number of inspirations, including Elvis, Orbison, and Al Green. "What makes the music from here special is its honesty. I think it's just a matter of dropping the veil over you soul and letting people see it. It's just that. It's like not being so figured out and just letting it happen."
Subsequent Allen albums followed along the same Memphis-inspired track, including 2006's Memphis Princess, which featured several collaborations with her good friend, Green's Hi Records' era guitar player Teenie Hodges.
On her latest song, the first single off of a record due early next year, Allen returns to the root of it all. Inspired by her first actual visit to Elvis home last year, Allen wrote the gospel-flavored piano ballad "Amazing Graceland" in a fevered pitch and unveiled it at this year's Memphis Mafia reunion during Elvis Week.
"As I looked out in the audience, I could see some tears in their eyes and it did wind up getting a standing ovation," says Allen. "But what was most amazing was when I looked over at George Klein and (Elvis songwriter) Mark James and some others, and I could see it really touched them, which meant the world to me."

E1 Records artist Deborah Allen and her video crew recently found themselves on the wrong side of Memphis. While in the Bluff City to debut her new release, "Amazing Graceland," during Elvis Week, Allen was scouting locations for her new video when her team decided to take an interesting, but ultimately very wrong, turn.
Allen, her manager Raymond Hicks, and video director Mark Nicolosi took a service road under the old Memphis Arkansas Bridge for what looked like the perfect location for shooting a nostalgic delta scene. Quickly, the scene turned into a barrage of flashing blue lights and officers charging toward the team with weapons drawn shouting, "Stay in the car! Keep your hands on the dash! Keep your hands in sight and don't move!"
Allen and crew had mistakenly driven into an area heavily protected by Homeland Security and authorities had been alerted. Turns out the entourage were risking a violation of the Patriot Act. After an interrogation and search, the officers realized that Allen was not a terrorist threat. Before departing, the officers listened to Allen's new song and were invited to attend her September 10 performance at the Bartlett, Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
Allen's tribute to the life and home of Elvis Presley, "Amazing Graceland", is available on i-Tunes.

Award-winning recording artist and songwriter, Deborah Allen, signed Belzoni resident, Callie Champion, to a songwriting and co-publishing deal on August 1, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee.
August 12, 2009 "People Are Crazy" got a lot of country fans' attention this year - enough to push Billy Currington's recording to the top of the charts. But it was getting plenty of attention even before the public heard it, evidenced in a No. 1 party thrown for songwriters Troy Jones and Bobby Braddock Tuesday at the Music Row office of the performing rights organization BMI.
The event was attended by a bevy of songwriters, including former Grammy nominee Deborah Allen ("Baby I Lied"), Jim Beavers ("Sideways"), Dallas Davidson ("Barefoot And Crazy") and Wynn Varble ("Waitin On A Woman"), among others.
Award-winning songwriter and recording artist Deborah Allen performs at 7 p.m. at Mississippi College's Swor Auditorium. Tickets are $30. All of Deborah's 'One On One' performers will be singing their new original songs with Deborah's band.
Allen's travels to Mississippi sprang from a chance meeting with Kelsie Morgan of Clinton and Ryan Sims of Laurel at a talent competition in Nashville where Allen was a celebrity judge.
A trip to their hometowns inspired her song, Mississippi Magic, and her "One on One" mentoring program.
Details: (601) 924-3185 or (601) 832-3391.
Early Friday morning (March 6), Allen complained of stomach pains, which caused her to miss interviews at CRS. A trip to the hospital revealed a ruptured appendix requiring immediate surgery. Allen was recovering in a Nashville-area hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.

Deborah Allen - Born With A Song In Her Voice - Graces Film-making Effort by Richard Edmondson
She's a singer and songwriter, celebrity spokesperson for an organization working with wounded veterans, and she's playing a major supporting role in "A Father's Choice," the movie currently being filmed in Dickson County.
"I think I was born singing," says Memphis native Deborah Allen, who broke into the music business at an early age and achieved major success with her 1983 hit, "Baby I Lied." The song rose to the top of the country charts and also became a cross-over hit on the Billboard pop charts.
Since then Allen has continued recording, but has also written a string of hits for other artists, including Janie Frickie, Tanya Tucker, John Conlee, LeAnn Rimes, Sheena Easton, Fleetwood Mac, and numerous, numerous others she's an extremely prolific songwriter, with more than a thousand songs published.
And music has always been in her soul. It was at the ripe age of four that Allen informed her mother she intended becoming a singer when she grew up.
"My mother, whose name is Rosetta when she was carrying me she realized that something was going on with her vocal cords," she said.
Allen's mother was later diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a voice disorder characterized by involuntary movement of the muscles of the larynx similar to that suffered by actress Katherine Hepburn.
"So my mother started noticing that her voice was breaking like that, and eventually over the years it got worse, but she was in tune with her body, and when she was carrying me, she said, she would say a prayer, 'Please let this baby be a healthy baby,' and she said, 'I think because I knew something was going wrong with my voice, I would always add, "Oh and please let this baby have a strong voice!"
Rosetta's prayer was answered. Her daughter does indeed have a strong voice, a fact becoming strikingly obvious when you listen to her belt out her song, "Deeper Waters" more about which in a moment.
While Allen has made her mark mainly in the music business, she is not a complete stranger to performing in front of the camera. She's done TV appearances and music videos and has even been in one other film.
"I did a cameo in a movie called 'Radical Jack' with Billy Ray Cyrus, but I played myself I was a singer in a bar," Allen said.
But her role in "A Father's Choice" is quite a bit different, and is considerably more than just a cameo she plays an investigator with the Tennessee Department of Children's Services in the movie, which portrays a father's efforts to protect his daughter from abuse.
"This is actually the first time I've played a character outside of myself on film, and I have to say that I really am acting, because in this particular movie I play a hard hearted, rule-following social worker."
Allen is joined on the cast by fellow country artist Mark Collie, who plays a police detective, and both have written songs that are to be included in the movie's sound track.
"We've written lots of songs together. I sang on two of his albums, and then on one of my albums I recorded a song that he and I wrote, so he and I have real good chemistry. We're good buddies," she said.
So how has Allen found it working in Dickson County and making a movie here?
"It's really been great. I've done a lot of things in New York and L.A., like I said TV and videos and other shoots, so I travel a lot, and most people when they think of the film industry they think of Hollywood, you know," she says.
"But I guess one of the things that I most felt about it (working in Dickson County) was I was so impressed with the quality and professionalism that I'm seeing out there. It's a great crew and a great script, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more exciting for me...I think it will make huge differences in children's rights, and maybe parental rights too - for the fathers," she added.
Allen is greatly excited about her plans for recording an album with songwriting legend Bobby Braddock beginning later this month, and she is also on the bill for the upcoming Riverbend Festival, to be held June 8-16 at Chattanooga's Ross Landing, where she will share a lineup with stars like Blake Shelton, Craig Morgan, Jars of Clay, Earth Wind and Fire, Steve Miller Band and others.

2007 Deborah Allen Working with New Country Artist Rissi Palmer
After high school, Palmer went to college in Chicago for a year. During that period, she journeyed to Nashville and arranged for country singer Deborah Allen to produce a demo of her singing so she could shop it for a record deal.
"It got some interest," Palmer says, "but I was really starting to just kind of figure out who I was as a vocalist." She did, however, through the intervention of her production company's Web master, score a songwriting deal at the age of 19 with Nashville's Song Planet music publishing company.
As soon as the reception wrapped, I headed to Schatzi's office to be briefed on my next event, the official opening parade. Angie and I headed to Broadway and 5th, and waited to be escorted to my car, which turned out to be a black Corvette!!! While waiting, I was pleasantly surprised to see Deborah Allen!!! She produced my very first demo in Nashville when I was 18. She looked amazing as always and she and her husband were as sweet as ever.
Few new country artists have ever come to the table with the combination of talent, passion, and experience that is Rissi Palmer. The talent has been evident since she was a little girl, standing on a milk crate as she sang with teenagers and adults in her church choir. The experience is as impressive as it is wide-ranging: she was a finalist on the CBS telecast, Star Search; was featured in CMT's documentary, Waiting in the Wings, along with Charley Pride and Trini Triggs, and on the network's Most Wanted Live. Rissi has worked with top producers, including Brian McKnight and Deborah Allen.
As for her passion for country music, that is probably best exemplified by the offer she didn't accept. She was just 19, when FLYTE TYME powerhouse producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men) heard a country-flavored demo she had recorded with Allen. They loved her voice and the fact that she both wrote music and played the guitar, and they offered her a record deal.
The first song on the CD, "Daddy's Got A Shotgun," was shipped to radio in early May 2007. Diehard fans may recognize the voices of native Texan and Reba's duet partner, ("Does He Love You,"), Linda Davis, and Deborah Allen (" Baby I Lied") who stepped into the studio to sing background vocals on this song. This is a sure hit that rocks and highlights the brothers harmonizing vocals.
Jeff Winters has recorded a CD featuring three new original songs recorded with members of the Bellamy Brothers touring band. Deborah Allen offers her signature vocal harmonies on the tracks and the result is a distinctive contemporary country sound.

Many of the songs were co-written with legendary Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, known for his early involment in Al Green's recording career as songwriter (Take Me To The River, Love And Happiness), and Hi Records studio guitarist.
It was a joy to journey home on this musical expedition. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Shreveport Times July 27, 2006 Shelley Crow had a little problem moments before she took the stage for the first time. She was 13 and a contestant in a hometown beauty contest in New Boston, Texas.
"I was so scared. I had a horrible case of hiccups before I went on stage. I thought, 'My God, am I going to make it through this song?' Crow said, recalling her rendition of Deborah Allen's "Baby, I Lied." "As soon as I took the microphone and I saw all the people, I wasn't scared. I forgot I had the hiccups. I got a standing ovation, so it made me want to come back again."
Today Crow works as a real estate agent and lives in Shreveport. She performs mostly at opry houses, local tribute concerts, benefits and the occasional talent contest. Singing country music is a way for her to express her individuality.

Country crooner Deborah Allen dropped by the Library of Congress on Monday night to kick off Copyright Awareness Week (which actually starts next week, but so be it). She strummed her guitar and belted out two of her hits -- both seemingly applicable to Washington life -- "Baby I Lied" and "I Fell in Love With a Dirty Old Man" for a hundred entertainment industry types.
Midway through, Allen paused, looked up at the imposing white statue sharing the stage behind her and said with a chuckle: "It's kind of fun having ol' James Madison back me up once in a while." He offered only stony silence.

From CountryReview.com: Another song contained on the Hands On disc that has a special meaning for Deborah is "Deeper Water". It was written during her stepfather's battle with cancer, and she always makes it a point to dedicate the song to him.
"As Billy put it shortly before he passed away, 'That's my song.' And I was quick to reply, 'It sure is.' He was always so proud to know that I always sang it in his honor.

It's always amazing how BMI turns a parking garage into an amazing formal dining area and there aren't even oil slick stains under the tables.
Red was the sensational color of the evening and saucy Aussie Sheree Austin looked particularly hot in a sleeveless plunging neckline number from Jamie. The long black satin gloves were nice touches.
But the fashion committee liked Deborah Allen in a similar dress, from Cache, as Babe of the Night. She was a devil with that red dress on.

I respect that in a chick.

PRODUCER: Byron Gallimore WRITERS: Deborah Allen, Rafe Van Hoy, Rory Bourke PUBLISHERS: Unichappell / Chappell & Co /Mike Curb / Diamond Storm / Posey Publishing, BMI
BNA 69071 (CD Promo w/ Song Repeated Three Times)
Originally signed to Arista, Iowa native Shannon Brown now joins BNA,
Arista's sister label under the RCA Label Group umbrella, and it looks like the
talented newcomer stands poised to break through. Here, she tackles Deborah
Allen's " Baby I Lied, " which peaked at No. 4 in 1983 on the country singles
chart (and No. 26 on The Billboard Hot 100). It's one of those songs that stands
the test of time, and it's a wise choice for a remake. The lyrics find a spurned
lover choking on words uttered when the end of a relationship didn't seem like
it would be such a painful thing: " Baby I Lied / Don't believe a word I said
before / Believe me when I say I love you more." Gallimore's production
skillfully builds the momentum, and Brown turns in a fine performance, shaded
with ache and regret. It's been 18 years since Allen's hit dominated airwaves,
so most programmers and listeners may not be familiar with it, and Brown's
version won't suffer by comparison. The newcomer's take on the tune is certainly worthy of its own day in the sun. ~ Deborah Evans Price, Billboard Associate Editor, Country

DEBORAH ALLEN: IS IT LOVE YET (3:30) Producer: David Malloy Writers: Pebe Sebert, Allan Todd Koppelberger, Andrea Marcee CURB 8770 (CD Promo)
It's been almost [five] years since Deborah Allen's last project, ["All That I Am,"] and there's no reason this fine track shouldn't open yet another chapter for this multi-talented artist at country radio. In an era in which programmers are hollerin' for memorable melodies and stand-out singers, Allen delivers the goods on her Curb Records debut with a ribbon tied on top. "Is It Love Yet" is a sweetly presented song about letting the walls down and inviting love in, sung with urgency and a wonderful touch of drama that puts her right in line with the multitude of gracious lady singers currently lighting up the airwaves. The hook is solid and uplifting, and Allen has never been in better form. This one's got everything going for it; if radio would be kind enough to open the door for this hard-working artist, Allen could at last join the ranks of those female artists she helped lay the ground-work for the first time around.

The believability of the songs, the tenderness of his voice, the sincere collaboration of the musicians and engineers, create a gift of beautiful music...and now, a new fresh flavor has been added...the exciting voice of Deborah Allen...a bright new entry into Jim's recording career. Her professionalism and enthusiastic spirit made it a pleasure preparing the duets contained on Side A of this album. It is my true wish that you will enjoy Deborah singing with Jim as well as the other five classic songs that Jim sings by himself. To complete the whole "new" sound, new intrumental background has been added to each one of the songs. --Mary Reeves

Billboard December 5, 1998:
"...The [Deborah] Allen collection is an especially welcome addition to Nashville's discography. Even before the steamy-voiced singer cut an album for Capitol in 1980 here, Allen made musical waves when the late Jim Reeves' widow, Mary, selected her as the first artist to duet with her late husband's tracks. Those three songs are included here, along with 18 other tracks from her Capitol, RCA and Giant recordings. Allen provides new liner notes, along with new photographs. Like Sylvia, Allen was a major talent who has never realized her full potential." --Chet Flippo

HEADLINE: LOOKS LIKE MESSINA IS DOING ALL RIGHT
BYLINE: By Randy Cordova
You can tell a lot about country music listeners by seeing how they react
when certain names are evoked.
Mention Reba, for example, and rising singer Jo Dee Messina gives the
expected response: "She's just great," Messina gushes, speaking in her rapid,
no-twang style. "I love her so much."
Then the subject of Sylvia comes up, a one-name goddess from the Breakfast
Club decade who sported feathered hair and sang feathery songs. "Oh, my God!"
Messina yells, before she starts singing: " 'Well, your nobody called today, and
she hung when I asked her name' - I still know every word!"
No doubt about it, Messina is a child of the '80s. She's vague about her age
("I'm in my mid-20s" is all the Massachusetts native will say), but she still
gushes with the enthusiasm of a star-struck teen when she looks back at her
formative years.
"Oh, God, remember Deborah Allen? " she says in a rush of words. "I remember
lying in bed, screaming that song: 'BAY-BEE! BAY-BEE! BAY-BEE! BAY-BEE, I LIED!'
Man, Deborah Allen actually wound up singing background on my record, it was
very cool."

The Joe Jackson interview: Deborah Allen, Country Charmer
BYLINE: By JOE JACKSON
SOUTHERN charm can be as transparent as the blouse Deborah Allen wears in
the publicity shots that accompany her latest album, Delta Dreamland. It can
also be a form of chiffon that hides in its folds, not warm flesh, but a cold
switchblade - a "y'all come back now" undercut by the coded message "but in the
mean-time, why not get to hell out of here?". With this in mind I must admit
that many times during my conversation with Deborah Allen I wondered whether
she deserved the title of the most manipulative, or the most sincere, southern
charmer I ever met.
Indeed, at one point, as, Ms Allen leaned forward while sitting on the edge
of her armchair backstage at Nashville's Fan Fair, rested her palm on my knee
and whispered, as one would to a lover, I had to leap beyond journalistic
objectivity and ask, "Are you for real?" Brecht would have loved this shattering of the illusion of intimacy; as would all those readers of The Irish Times who have no desire to be seduced - through me - by Deborah Allen. Yet the question sent a shadow scurrying across Allen's eyes. With hurt rather than anger in her voice, she said "I don't know how you could ask me that". The next day a note arrived with the assurance that "the person you were talking with was the real me". I'm still not quite so sure.
However, it is precisely this sense of poetic ambiguity, and a clearly potent
sex appeal, which sets Deborah Allen's music apart from the travelling pack of
would - be Trisha Yearwoods currently trying to make their mark in Nashville.
And if her music does. to quote her press release. "conjure up images of sultry
southern nights and spicy soul" that's because her base is not Nashville but
Memphis.
Her voice, flowing like molasses on a Mississippi afternoon resonates with
echoes of all the Memphis greats, from Al Green back to Elvis. Probably more
rock/soul/gospel than country, she even claims that one of the most poignant
songs oil the album, Two Shades Of Blue, reflects an affinity for Roy Orbison.
The Big O would, no doubt, approve of this powerfully-sung tale of a couple, who should be lovers but can't be. But isn't Deborah Allen a little too young to be taking her reference points from Memphis in the early 1950s?
"That's just one point of reference, and the soul thing from the early
Seventies is another, especially Al Green. And couldn't you say the same about
U2, who have also been heavily influenced by the music of Memphis, Tennessee?"
she says. "It's really got nothing to do with age. Once you've been to Memphis
you can't help but breathe in its music - and the point is that I was born and
raised in the city, so how could I escape its influence? And it seems to me that young people in Dublin also love Memphis soul, if I'm to believe that movie The Commitments."
Elaborating on her childhood in Memphis, Deborah Allen claims she can't
help but feel she is a pure product of the city's musical history. However,
slipping into her most bewitching mode, as a southern anecdotist, she spins a
tale that evokes images of a Memphis rooted as much in Tennessee Williams and
Eudora Welty as it is in rock'n'roll. "My daddy had an automobile upholstery
shop' on Union Avenue, which is where Sun Records is, right? And what I remember is that Willie Mitchell used to bring seat covers around to Dad's shop and I knew he used to produce people like Al Green and Ike and Tina Turner on Hi
Records," she says, with tangible delight.
"And when I was three years old I confided in my mother, I said mother can
you keep a secret?' She said sure, honey' and I said I would like to be a singer or an actress. Do you think I could be?'
She answered, Mother thinks you can be anything you want to be, which I
thought was very wise of her, to acknowledge the validity of a little child's
dream. Then, later, we'd be riding down the streets of Memphis and I'd be
standing beside her in the open-topped car and she'd be saying, remember, Deb,
you're from Memphis, the home of the blues and the base of the King of
rock'n'roll' and she'd be pumping all that stuff into my system. So I really had no choice other than to go into music."
Her mother also pumped into her psyche one central tenet in relation to
performance which was, she says. telling her that "the best way to connect with
other people is to sing out with all your heart, give it everything you got".
The words are not too far removed from the advice Sun Records owner, Sam
Phillips, once gave to his protegees Elvis, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison.
As part of the same continuum Deborah Allen co-wrote one track on her
album, Chain Lightning, with Billy Burnette, son of the Fifties rockabilly star Dorsey Burnette. She also co-produced, Delta Dreamland and admits that, as with Daniel Lanois's work with Dylan in New Orleans for Oh Mercy, the mood of her album has more to do with capturing the ambience of a city than it has to do
with the lyrical content of many of the songs. It even opens with the sound of
crickets slicing through the silence on a Mississippi night.
"That's why I called the album Delta Dreamland, which itself is a true story,
about my Mother and Daddy and about the cyclical nature of life," she explains.
"And that's because in the last few years I've taken the time to look into my
own history, and all points lead back to those family and musical roots in
Memphis. I've tried singing other forms of rock but nothing seems as right to me
as this."
Deborah Allen has been recording for more than 10 years, and composing hit
songs for the likes of Diana Ross, Sheena Easton and Tanya Tucker. She doesn't
need to be told that the music industry is less interested in preserving social
or familial history than in marketing product. Has she any problems with the
possibility that her break may have come because country music needs the female
equivalent of male "hunks" to sell to its new, younger audience?
"I don't know if I'm the female equivalent of a hunk," she says, laughing. "I
try to look as good as I can. But when I pose in that blouse on my album cover
I'm just being myself. I'm not going along with any marketing strategy imposed
on me from above. I'm a full-blown girl who has a strong sense of fashion. I
know how I want to look and what I want to project. And if the picture on the
album is 'sultry' and 'sexy' that, too, is part of the mood I want to capture in
the music."
What is Deborah's response to feminists who claim that the image of women in
country music is a turn-off, that if they aren't merely decorative they're
victims of men, mindless staves to romance? "Not in my music they aren't," she
says. "Listen to If You're Not Going To Love Me (I'll Give You Something Not To
Love). That woman is not a victim of men. And this whole image of women in
country has really outdated over the past two years, with strong, independent
women like Trisha and Pam Tillis coming on the scene.
"And part of the reason is because we now are also becoming businesswomen in
the industry. I have my own publishing company, and Deborah Allen Tours is
becoming a viable business venture, so I think feminists that deny these aspects
of country music are just being blind to the changes. that have taken place. In
fact, I'd say women get a better deal in country than they do in rock'n' roll."
DEBORAH Allen also believes that women writing songs in country music don't
have to present "X-rated stuff" like Janet Jackson and Madonna in order to be
heard.
"I don't like explicit lyrics but I do like sexual allure and celebrating, in
my songs, the energy and tension between men and women," she says, lowering her
voice to a whisper. "We were created men and women so we could create more life
and if we can't write about that, and celebrate it, what can we write about? On
my record I sing You looked my way and changed my life/Touched me and I came
alive/Like flashes in the summer sky/You set off a storm inside. No one can deny that men and women create their own energy together and I'm not going to stop myself from writing about that - or doing it."
Anyone who has seen Deborah Allen in concert will be aware that she taps
into mass energy on stage. She sides with Bono, who recently suggested he may be
addicted to the emotional charge generated between a performer and an audience.
"I myself have a lot of energy and I like to get intimate with people,
whether that is through talking here with you today or when I get out on to a
stage," she claims. "My goal is to use my music as a vehicle for people to
experience their own emotions, and there is nothing like the feeling of a mass
audience experiencing the same emotion at the same time. I definitely am
hooked to that. But then that's what I love even when I see somebody else's
show. I once saw U2 on television and it hit me so hard, emotionally, that I
wrote a quite political rock song called I Feel You Too which was my response to the energy they send out. So I know what Bono is talking about.
"And though he may not say it so much these days, I think we're all doing
that in the name of God. Music is just a channel through which God works,
whether it is U2 inspiring me to write a song or me inspiring an audience to put
their fists up in the air and sing If You're Not Going To Love Me. That's what
it's all about, for me."
Smiling before she concludes, Deborah Allen says, "and if you can't tell
that I have a true desire to connect with people, on stage or through talking
with you, then I don't know what I can say to make you believe me.

Originally signed to Arista, Iowa native Shannon Brown now joins BNA, Arista's sister label under the RCA Label Group umbrella, and it looks like the talented newcomer stands poised to break through. Here, she tackles Deborah Allen's " Baby I Lied, " which peaked at No. 4 in 1983 on the country singles chart (and No. 26 on The Billboard Hot 100). It's one of those songs that stands the test of time, and it's a wise choice for a remake. The lyrics find a spurned lover choking on words uttered when the end of a relationship didn't seem like it would be such a painful thing: " Baby I Lied / Don't believe a word I said before / Believe me when I say I love you more." Gallimore's production skillfully builds the momentum, and Brown turns in a fine performance, shaded with ache and regret. It's been 18 years since Allen's hit dominated airwaves, so most programmers and listeners may not be familiar with it, and Brown's version won't suffer by comparison. The newcomer's take on the tune is certainly worthy of its own day in the sun.

Reeves is accompanied by an unknown female singer on this waltz-like ballad laden with strings over electric guitar, piano and acoustic guitar. Each vocal plays off the other and takes a solo effort with duo combinations at the bridge.

Liner Notes:
For many years Jim Reeves recordings have been heard and loved by millions of people all over the world. To complete the whole "new" sound, new instrumental background has been added to each one of the songs.

Deborah Allen performed "Telepathy" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand Saturday April 25, 1987.
Los Angeles Times March 15, 1987 By the way, Prince has yet another protege hitting the charts. Her name: Deborah Allen, who made a couple of country albums for RCA before turning to funk music. Her new album is titled "Telepathy." The title cut was written, produced and performed (except for Allen's vocal, of course) by Joey Coco, who insiders say is none other than the Purple One himself.
Rolling Stone June 18, 1987 Random Notes "Prince's Poppers" Article ...that's to be expected, but Deborah Allen? "I wrote a letter to Prince," says this young Nashville veteran, "and sent him a tape of my new album, I just asked him if he wanted to get involved." Prince replied with a distinctly noncountry tune called "Telepathy," which is now the title track on Deb's record. "I think it brought out a side of me that even my own songs don't," she says. Allen compositions have been recorded by such country stars as Janie Frickie, Conway Twitty, Jewel Blanch and Pebble daniel, but she sees her future in the pop charts. "I never imagined myself becoming a country singer," she says, "though it has been an enriching side road."
Newsweek May 4, 1987 "His Royal Badness, Inc." Prince article ...under the pseudonym 'Joey Coco,' Prince has written for Kenny Rogers and country singer Deborah Allen. He's everywhere.Billboard April 25, 1987 Page M-16 Meet Joey Coco, who wrote and produced a 12-inch single for Deborah Allen, the country singer who is venturing into pop on RCA. Coco also wrote a song for Kenny Rogers' album last year.
Joey Coco? That's Prince 's new self
By Jon Bream

Jamie Starr vanished. Christopher Tracy died. Now meet Joey Coco, Prince's latest alter ego.
Using the pseudonym Joey Coco, Prince wrote "You're My Love" for Kenny Rogers' latest album, and he wrote and produced "Telepathy," a new 12-inch single for Deborah Allen, a former country singer making her first foray into pop.
An anxious Allen provided the tipoff that Coco is indeed Prince. She told a Nashville journalist Prince wrote and produced her first pop single. Her biggest country hit, "Baby I Lied," received some exposure on easy-listening radio stations in 1983. Before that, Allen was known for recording strange duets with the late Jim Reeves, whose ancient vocal contributions were culled from archives while Allen recorded her vocals anew.
"Telepathy" is a soft-funk number driven by synthesized horns. Musically, there are no tell-tale signs of Prince's involvement such as the ones detectable on his pseudonymous contributions to Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls." But such lyrics as "You're a hungry wolf in a valley of lambs" in "Telepathy" might suggest Prince. Certainly, the phrasing could have been coaxed by him, especially the breathy "I want you" section and the enunciation that recalls Tina Turner's.
Rogers' "You're My Love" is bland, banal and forgettable; it's understandable why Prince or any other writer would have used a pen name. The recording was produced by Jay Graydon, best known for his work with Al Jarreau and Manhattan Transfer.
Prince first worked under a pseudonym as Jamie Starr when he produced the the early records by the Time and Sheila E. Christopher Tracy was the character he portrayed in his second film, "Under the Cherry Moon," and he used the moniker Christopher as his credit for writing the Bangles' "Manic Monday."
The contract under which Warner Bros. Records distributes Prince's Paisley Park custom label apparently forbids him from doing outside projects under his name. Hence, the Joey Coco and the publishing company, Parisongs. Both names apparently reflect Prince's fascination with France, where he filmed "Under the Cherry Moon." (Rumors abroad say he has been producing a record for Princess Stephanie of Monaco.) A band in his next film, "Dream Factory," will be called the Coco Boys, according to Deep Purple, a source within his Royal Court. In addition, it is widely assumed - though denied by his representatives - that Prince used the pseudonym Austra Chanel on the recent Paisley Park album by Madhouse, a jazz-fusion group. Think about it: Coco and Chanel as in Coco Chanel, the famous French fashion designer.
Neither the press-shy Prince nor Coco was available for comment.
With ex-Revolutionaries Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman gone from Paisley Park, Prince or Coco is concentrating on other women in his Royal Court. Sheila E.'s new album hit the stores last week. Scheduled for release next month on Paisley Park Records is the debut album of Jill Jones, who appeared in Prince's "1999" video as a backup singer and in the film "Purple Rain" as a waitress; David Rivkin, Paisley Park's principal knob turner, produced that LP last year. Scheduled for release in May on Paisley Park is the debut album by Taj A Seville, who was known as Nancy Richardson when she was a disc jockey at KMOJ.
They may not be the only new women in Prince's Court. His representatives reportedly are negotiating with Bonnie Raitt, whose contract with Warner Bros. expires this month. Raitt would be the first established artist whom Prince has signed to his own label. Meanwhile, Prince's new single, "Sign o' the Times," is one of the hottest records in the country. To trumpet the release of the single last week, Warner Bros. placed ads containing the entire song lyrics in a variety of newspapers and magazines from the Village Voice in New York to the City Pages. Prince's new album is due later this month with a concert tour, possibly starting in Europe, to follow this spring.
